How to Make Your own Smudges and How They Help You

This is a great way to get a fresh start in the new Year, or anytime if the year when you feel the need to cleanse and remove old energies and negativity from your home.

If you are new to smudging, know that we all have the ability to cleanse and clear negativities out of our lives, our homes, our environment, our things, etc.

Negative energies are created from negative thoughts, feelings and emotions. We do this in many ways. Arguments, yelling, cursing, complaining, gossip, jealousy, greed, negative thoughts, acts of violence… And the list goes on.

So the question is how do we get rid of negative energy after we or someone else in our environment has created it?

Simple answer… Smudge, cleanse, clean and consecrate the space!

DIY SAGE SMUDGE SPRAY

Here’s what you’ll need:

• 1 tinted (blue or amber)2oz glass spray bottle – one with a fine spray stream is best

• witch hazel – alcohol free

• Distilled water

• 10 drops sage essential oil

• 5 drops lavender essential oil

• 3 drops lemon essential oil

• 1 tablespoon Himalayan pink salt

• Pinch of small crystals like rose quartz (optional) *mine are the size of rock salt

Here’s how to make your sage spray:

• First, you’ll want to add your dry ingredients to the bottle. This includes the Himalayan pink salt &/or crystals.

• Next, it’s time to add in the sage, lavender, and lemon essential oils.

• Lastly, fill your bottle halfway with distilled water, then fill with witch hazel.

• Now all that’s left is shaking it up, and it’s ready to use!

If possible, open all the doors and windows. Start in the far left corner of the space and work your way in a clockwise direction. Take a deep breath before you begin and spray a light mist over your whole body first, asking to be cleansed and cleared of all negativity to begin the cleansing ritual. Set the intention of what you want it to hold. It should be aimed at cleansing the space of negativity and all manner of impurities. As you move around the space, lightly spray the smudge spray every few feet. Visualize the spray drawing out all negativities that may have taken up space. This will wash all the spiritual dirt away. Repeat this ritual and all spaces, and you may set an intention in each space if you like. If you’re like me you’ll also want to smudge anyone else in the home, along with the pets. It just makes everyone feel better!

Smudging Tips

When I get to my front door, I stand in my power and tell all dark &/or low frequency energies or entities to leave and that they are not welcome back anytime forever more! I then sage myself again on the front porch and say a prayer of gratitude and love before heading back in.

Additional Options

Salt your space.

Salt is the oldest mineral on earth and for centuries has been used as a tool for protections. Use a salt cleansing prayer while you walk the space sprinkling salt around the exterior perimeter of your home and/or property. When you have done the perimeter, be sure to place salt across any exterior doorways as well. When you place the salt in the doorway say: “There will be no low frequency energies or riffraff enter the space at any time… only energies of the highest love and light may enter. So it is said, so it will be”

How Often Should You Use Smudges?

Myself, I smudge every full and new moon so twice a month, I am clearing the energies in my space to allow for a more harmonious and lighter atmosphere.

I found it has made a huge difference.

Another good time to smudge is when you buy a new home or you purchase new or used furniture.

If you’re feeling stressed, tense or after being sick are good times to do it as well.

Have fun and don’t stress about doing it wrong!

As long as you have a clear intention before and while you’re smudging, you are good!
